Our Golden Text: “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). Discussion and Application Points By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
Sticky Proverb) I am sure most of us have been in a church services where the Choir sang one or two stirring songs before the preacher stood to preach. The focus of their singing is to gather the congregation’s attention away from distractions and prepare their hearts to hear the word of God. As the choir sings people begin to rejoice and praise God. Sometimes the congregation sings along, as the words minister to their soul. Now the congregation is ready! and they look forward to hearing the word that God has impressed upon the preacher to bring for that service. John the Baptist was like the choir, lifting his voice, preparing the way of the Lord. John 1:23 He was referred to as the forerunner of Christ. Now let us go over our Key Words to get understanding from the word of God concerning the origin of all things. Section 1: Key Words We will not understand the lesson text, if we cannot define its key words. The word Forerunner means: a person who goes or is sent in advance to announce the coming of someone or something that follows; The word Baptist or Baptizer means: One who administers the baptism – Baptism itself means: to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe The word Lamb of God is a title for Jesus that appears in the Gospel of John. It appears in John 1:29, and refers to “Him as the perfect and ultimate sacrifice for sin. In order to understand who Christ was and what He did, we must begin with the Old Testament, which contains prophecies concerning the coming of Christ as a “guilt offering.” (Isaiah 53:10). In fact, the whole sacrificial system established by God in the Old Testament set the stage for the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice God would provide as atonement for the sins of His people (Romans 8:3; Hebrews 10).” gotquestions.org/Jesus-Lamb-of-God.html Section 2: Read Related Scriptures of the lesson. Lesson: John 1:29 – 34 / Read background Matthew 3:1-17 29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. 30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. 31. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. 32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. 35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples. 36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
