Lesson: Matthew 23:1-8, 23-26 Time: A.D. 30 Place: Jerusalem Golden Text: "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: all therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not" Matthew 23:2-3 Introduction In reading the golden text, I immediately thought of James' warning to be doers of the word and not hearers only, adding as an important note, "deceiving your own selves." James 1:22 Knowing what to do and doing it has always been a struggle for people in general. I'm sure we've had times when we've know what to do, (lets take some that is familiar to everyone) like eating healthy. We can be quick to tell someone else "you really should eat your vegetables and fruit while throwing in "and exercise" to stay healthy. Do we lead by example? How many of use are guilty of recommending to someone else things that we are not doing? Ouch! We must practice what we preach, because as the old saying goes, "Actions speak louder then words." People watch what we do, not what we say. Paul instructed Titus, "in all things showing thyself a pattern of good works:" Titus 2:7 Jesus Warned his disciples not to be like the scribes and Pharisees because they often told the people to observe laws and obey regulations that they were not keeping. He called them hypocrites because their concern was not for the people, but rather to be seen and to be highly esteemed in the eyes of men. This Week's Lesson Text: Matthew 23:1-8, 23-26 1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Matthew-Chapter-23/ Below are lesson and activity links to support this week's lesson: Word for life says - Unjust Leader
