In this week's lesson forgive or not forgive, that is the question. I'm sure we have all experienced people or situations in our lives where forgiveness was needed. Has there been a time when you needed to forgive someone or needed to be forgiven?
The Lord teaches a parable about the importance of forgiving. A parable is a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principles, or moral lesson. It can be a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. In this story a man owed his king a huge sum of money. When he learned his fait for not being able to repay the money he begged for time to pay it even though he knew it was hopeless. The king had mercy on him and said he would forgive his dept. (That means he did not have to pay the money he owed.) This same servant who had just been forgiven the large debt found a friend who owed him money and insisted he pay it. When his friend asked him to give him time, because he did not have the money to pay what he owed. The friend asked for time to pay the money but the man was angry and was not willing to wait. He had his friend arrested and thrown in jail. When the king heard what happened he was very angry with the man he had forgiven the debt he owed and called him a wicked servant. The king had him thrown in jail and said he would be tortured until he paid the money he owned. Jesus ended the parable by say that same thing would happen to anyone who does not forgive his family, neighbor or friends when they do wrong. If we do not forgive them, our heavenly Father will not forgive us.
